The WEST POMERANIAN VILLAGE
ROUTE amidst the peaceful Peene landscape, which is highly
valuable ecologically and has numerous historical attractions,
provides the ideal setting for a visit orientated towards nature
and culture.
The Peene: marshes and lowland
forest, parkland estates and castles, ruins but also well-maintained
village scenes with village churches, beavers and otters, eagles
and orchids, gourmet restaurants, Viking graves, and ostrich
breeding. The route passes through landscapes whose tranquillity
was long thought to have been forgotten. Situated on both sides
of the Peene valley, West Pomerania offers a great variety of
old things to admire and new things to discover!
Suggested tours for ramblers, cyclists
and canoeists mean everyone can experience the “Amazon of the
North” and every year brings more to enjoy.
There is plenty to do here: The
world of experiences in the Peene valley can be discovered through
the interplay between AGRICULTURE, NATURE and CULTURE. Only by
working together can they ensure the basis for sustainable tourism.
Committed individuals, communal politicians, tourism professionals,
planners and scientists are implementing the ideas behind the
WEST POMERANIAN VILLAGE ROUTE.
Life along the Peene river:
- nature in the wild
- picturesque villages
- historical cities and sites
A journey of discovery along
the West Pomeranian village route
Agriculture
West Pomerania is characterised
by agriculture and the fishing industry. From traditional production
through to industrial processing, a large number of high quality
products are produced. And very little of it was known up till
now outside the boundaries of the region. The “West Pomeranian
farmers’ market” offers these products, in farm shops and at
markets, in gastronomic outlets and in the regional shops of
Gützkow.
Worth a visit
The traditional West Pomeranian
country estate at Lüssow (A) – Documentation, an exhibition
and the use of historical agricultural technology are being
continuously expanded to create an agricultural experience
with ever more attractions. Farm shop and guided tours. Open
all year round.
Gut Owstin ostrich farm (B) – This
business near Gützkow offers high quality agriculture brought
to life. Farm shop and visits. Open all year round.
Neetzow model farm (Neetzower
Agrarhof Peenetal GmbH) (C) - In Liepen, not far from Jarmen.
Take the guided tour and discover the business and technology
behind innovative high tech agriculture and new methods of
production management.
Pomeranian herb garden (D) – Wild
food, herbs and weeds: If you are looking for regional herbs,
fruit and juices, Lassan is the place for you. As well as the
delicious products of the cooperative, there are herb seminars
and more. |
Nature
A unique natural habitat: The
Peene flows through the largest fen land scape in Germany with
rare fauna and flora. A central issue for the region is how
to unite tourism with the protection of nature, which is why
efforts to gain national park status are being supported.
Worth a visit
The Peene – Because of its
unspoiled nature, the Peene is also known as the “Amazon of the
North” and is best discovered by canoe. There are canoe stations
for instance in Anklam, Menzlin, Stolpe and Jarmen.
Marsh renaturation – The
Peene valley landscape special interest group is working intensively
on the rewatering of extensive areas of marshland and polder,
amongst others in Anklam, Menzlin and Gützkow – making a major
contribution to climate conservation.
Natural adventure in the Peene valley – The
adventure tour guide ‘‘Natur’’ will show you the way and explain
the world of plants and animals (beaver lodges, sea eagle eyries,
otter trails, grey heron breeding colonies, orchid meadows etc.).
An adventure trail due to be created in 2005/06 will link the
local viewpoints together.
Nature tours and environmental education – Certified
nature guides will bring you close to the beauties of nature
on water and on land, along with their ecological sensitivities.
In this way you can see the most beautiful places and receive
first-hand information.
Culture
From Viking stone monuments
and Slav settlements in Menzlin via the 800 year old monastery
in Stolpe through to the Renaissance moated castle in Quilow:
the varied cultural heritage offers you scenery, village churches,
parks and stately homes worth visiting. But enormous efforts
are needed to maintain them so tourism fulfils the task of
give and take.
Worth a visit
Menzlin Viking camp (E) – In
the “old camp” at Ziethen are the boat burial grounds of the
Vikings who maintained a settlement here between 800 and 1000.
Once the “Via Regia” led here, an important trade route across
the Peene.
Stolpe monastery ruins (F) – In
1153 the first monastery in all of Pomerania was built here.
The tunnel vault from the foundations of this stone-built church
is still standing today.
Villages and towns - Lassan
(G), Anklam (H), Gützkow (I) and Jarmen (J), mediaeval churches,
museums, historic townscapes and villages in their distinctive
settings are well worth a trip at any time of year.
The region – Castles, manor
houses and churches await your visit, such as the lovingly restored
dairy school in Schlatkow (K), the castle hotels in Bömitz (L),
Neetzow (M) and Ranzin (N) or the estate and inn in Stolpe (O).
The WEST POMERANIAN VILLAGE ROUTE is a journey of discovery not
to be missed.
